The 'Aha Nui

Traditional Leadership and Practice in Contemporary Settings
All 501c3 non-profits need a board of directors to guide the organization. There are many ways to build this team. Waipilihoa is using a different approach. Each Kauhale has a seat reserved on the 'aha nui. It will take time to build up their own internal organization and leadership, identifying their loea, alaka'i, kumu and maybe kahuna. When they are ready, each kauhale will put a name forward to take the seat reserved for them on the 'aha nui. Til then, a trusted and competent practitioner who is not from Molokai will hold the position in trust, continuing to help build up Waipilihoa in pono ways until Molokai is ready to assume the kuleana. This ensures that the board member is truly selected by those who are most qualified to make the decision.
