Hale Kākoʻi

Stone is an enduring tool material, used to make pounders, lamps, images, and adzes. The kāko’i is responsible for furnishing adzes of all sizes, for large tree felling to chiseling notches in canoes. Ahupua’a with quarries leveraged this source material to trade for other items across the islands. Hale Naula facilitates the restoration of the art of adze making, working with developing loea to research and practice traditional adze making techniques, using authentic materials. Waipilihoa is working to restore the use of these tools across all Hawaiian disciplines while building up the archive of historical data of ko’i making on Molokai.
Hale Kālai Lāʻau
